Madrid eliminated in 2020 Olympic host vote

Buenos Aires, Argentina (Sports Network) – Madrid was eliminated as a potential host of the 2020 Olympics in the first round of voting by the International Olympic Committee.

Madrid and Istanbul were tied after the first round, leaving Tokyo ahead in the balloting, forcing IOC members to vote on just the bottom two cities. Istanbul then won with 49 of the 94 votes to stay alive in the process.

Since Tokyo did not receive a majority of the first-round votes, a second round between the Japanese city and Istanbul took place with the winner to host the 2020 Summer Games.

An announcement is expected later Saturday.
