It’s Team USA vs. Team USA in the Beach Volleyball Final!
Misty May-Treanor and Kerry Walsh Jennings have been the talk of American beach volleyball for years. They have established themselves as champions; together they’ve won two gold medals in their sport; they’ve done everything they can to prove why they deserve they to be America’s beach volleyball sweethearts. And now, April Ross and Jennifer Kessy are looking to take that title away from them in what’s sure to be one of the most exciting Olympic events for Americans in London so far!
Just before Kessy was about to step out onto the court in their game against Brazil yesterday, Walsh Jennings went up to congratulate her; and to tell her that she wanted Kessy to win because “I want to see you tomorrow.” All in good fun and no, there’s nothing like two American teams competing for gold to bring out some good old patriotism. But this is a competition, and both teams are taking it very seriously. Both are incredibly hungry for gold.
“It’s funny in our sport,” said May-Treanor when talking about playing the “other” American team. “All U.S. teams are together, but we’re also individual teams. We respect each other. We talk to each other. We don’t train together, because it’s each team out for itself.”
And she better be. Kessy talked about facing the American champions, too and said, “We’re here to battle and make them earn it.”
The two teams have competed against each other three times this year, with Walsh Jennings and May-Treanor taking all three. And while it’s the first Olympics for Kessy and Ross, it will be May-Treanor’s last, as she’s leaving competitive volleyball.
