Indians, Francona agree to extension

Cleveland, OH (SportsNetwork.com) – The Cleveland Indians and manager Terry Francona have agreed on a two-year contract extension that will keep him with the Tribe through the 2018 season.

The new deal also contains club options for the 2019 and 2020 campaigns.

After a wildly successful stint in Boston, Francona took over the Indians reins in 2013 and has led them to consecutive winning seasons for the first time since 2000-2001, while compiling a mark of 177-147 (.546) over his two years with the club.

His 177 wins and .546 winning percentage rank 4th and 5th-best, respectively, in club history among managers through their first two seasons. After reaching the wild card game in 2013, Francona’s Indians went 85-77 this past season, finishing three games out of a playoff spot.

Francona, of course, led the to two World Series titles before arriving in Cleveland and owns an overall managerial record of 1,206-1,062 (.532). His 1,206 wins are the fourth most among active managers.

Dating back to 2004 with Boston, Francona’s teams have posted winning records in 10 consecutive seasons, the longest such managerial streak since 2009 (Joe Torre), in addition to six postseason appearances.

Francona had already been under contract through 2016.
