In 1995, Gregory Maguire wrote a novel called Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. The novel paralleled the events of The Wizard of Oz but things took place from the point of view of the wicked witch Elphaba. When Maguire wrote the novel, he had no idea that it would one day become a musical. In fact, Universal actually optioned the rights to the novel to create a movie out of it. Stephen Schwartz, a composer and lyricist talked with Maguire as well as a producer at Universal named Marc Platt about turning the novel into a musical. At the time, it was not what one would imagine for the novel. However, the results really do speak for themselves.

Wicked is one of the most popular musicals playing around the world today, and the popularity shows no signs of diminishing in the near future. However, those who have read the novel will find that the adaptation is really quite the departure from the book. They took the idea of seeing things from a different perspective and built from there, utilizing some elements from the book and some from the 1939 movie. Those who have read the book will find quite a few differences, but it does not diminish it in the slightest.

In fact, most who have seen the show and read the book find that the changes, along with the addition of songs and a musical score help to make the musical something unique and separate from the novel. Some of the musical numbers that you may well be singing in your head after seeing the show include “I’m not that Girl”, “The Wizard and I”, “Wonderful”, “No One Mourns the Wicked”, and “For Good”.

The show has been playing for years, but the popularity keeps growing. You and your family will find a lot to love with this musical. Look to see if Wicked is playing in your area, or an area where you might be taking a vacation. You, your friends, and your family will have a great time at the musical.
