Garcia drops Martinez to capture WBO super featherweight belt
Corpus Christi, TX (SportsNetwork.com) – Miguel Angel Garcia dropped reigning champion Roman Martinez with a devastating body blow in the eighth round on Friday to capture the WBO super featherweight title at American Bank Center.
Garcia (33-0, 28 KOs) was knocked down by a right hand in the second round, but dominated from there before dropping Martinez (27-2-2, 16 KOs) for the 10 count with a left-handed body shot in the eighth round.
Also on Saturday’s card, Demetrius Andrade claimed the vacant WBO junior middleweight title with a split decision over Vanes Martirosyan.
Andrade (20-0, 13 KOs) won on scores of 117-110, 114-113, and 112-115 to defeat Martirosyan (33-1-1, 21 KOs).
Meanwhile, Nicholas Walters (23-0, 19 KOs) retained his WBO featherweight title with a dominating fourth-round TKO over Alberto Garza (25-6, 20 KOs).
