First MLB replay challenge upholds call on field
Pittsburgh, PA (SportsNetwork.com) – The first replay under the new challenge system took place Monday in Pittsburgh, and it took only a few minutes.
Chicago Cubs manager Rick Renteria challenged a call on a double play in the fifth inning when he thought pitcher Jeff Samardzija was safe on a close play at first base.
First base umpire Bob Davidson made the out call when Samardzija bunted into a 1-5-4 double play. Renteria calmly and slowly walked toward first base to question the call and decided he wanted to challenge.
The review, in a call from the field umpires with replay headquarters in New York, quickly upheld Davidson’s decision.
