Final Preakness workouts taking place
Baltimore, MD (SportsNetwork.com) – Illinois Derby winner Dynamic Impact and filly Ria Antonia had workouts Sunday morning at Churchill Downs ahead of Saturday’s Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course.
Trained by Mark Casse, Dynamic Impact worked five furlongs at Churchill Downs in 1:01 3/5 with jockey Miguel Mena aboard and galloped out six furlongs in 1:15 2/5 over a good main track.
“I am glad we got the work in,” said Norman Casse, assistant to his father. “He started off a little slow, but finished strong and moved well over the track.”
The 3-year-old’s scheduled Saturday workout was postponed when Churchill Downs received two inches of rain late Friday. The colt galloped 1 1/2 miles instead on Saturday. Dynamic Impact is scheduled to ship to Baltimore on Wednesday.
Ria Antonia, trained by Tom Amoss, worked a half-mile in 47 3/5 seconds with Hall of Fame jockey Calvin Borel riding. She galloped out five furlongs in 1:00.
“Everything has been extremely positive with her and whatever the plan is, we are excited about it,” said Amoss. “All of her preparation with me has been very good.
“I am going to talk with Ron (Paolucci head of Loooch Racing) this morning and then again Monday morning after she’s had a day. I am sure a decision will be made tomorrow (on the Preakness).”
Kentucky Derby winner California Chrome, with exercise rider Willie Delgado, galloped 1 3/4 miles at Churchill. The colt will fly to Baltimore after he has another gallop Monday morning.
“He loves it out there,” Delgado said. “Whatever he does, I just let him do. He is a rock star and I am just a groupie. He is the Kentucky Derby winner; he can do whatever he wants.”
Derby Trial runner-up Bayern galloped 1 1/2 miles with exercise rider Jorge Alvarez in the saddle. Bayern is set to have a workout Monday morning at Churchill.
Ride On Curlin galloped 1 1/8 miles with Bryan Beccia riding. The Arkansas Derby runner-up will gallop again Monday before catching a flight with California Chrome to Baltimore out of Lexington.
At Belmont Park, Kid Cruz galloped 1 1/2 miles for trainer Linda Rice. Kid Cruz is scheduled to arrive Monday from New York.
“He’s sharp and he’s ready for a race,” said Rice about the Federico Tesio and Private Terms Stakes winner. “It’s a very prestigious race, and it’s very exciting to have a horse go to the Preakness that deserves mention. Frankly, I’m really not interested in going to a race unless I think we have a legitimate chance.”
Social Inclusion galloped 1 1/2 miles at Pimlico Sunday morning. He will have a Monday workout.
“He looks good,” said trainer Manny Azpurua. “He’s ready for tomorrow.”
