Cinco Charlie one to beat in Mine That Bird Derby
Sunland Park, NM (SportsNetwork.com) – Cinco Charlie, trained by Steve Asmussen, will go for his third straight stakes victory in next Saturday’s $100,000 Mine That Bird Derby at Sunland Park.
The one-mile Mine That Bird, named in honor of the 2009 Kentucky Derby winner, is a prep race for the 1 1/8-mile Sunland Derby on Sunday, March 22.
Owned by William and Connie Heiligbrodt, Cinco Charlie has drawn post 5 in the six-horse field and will have Casey Lambert riding for the second straight start. The pair teamed up to win Sunland’s Riley Allison Futurity on Jan. 24.
Cinco Charlie began his career with consecutive wins at Churchill Downs, including the Bashford Manor. Moving to Saratoga, the colt was third in the Sanford and fifth in the Saratoga Special. Cinco Charlie returned to the winner’s circle with Delaware Park’s First State Dash followed by a third in Belmont Park’s Futurity.
The colt began his three stakes win streak with the James F. Lewis at Laurel Park followed by the Sugar Bowl Stakes at Fair Grounds to end 2014. Cinco Charlie has earned $335,802 with six wins in nine starts.
