Charles, Watt, Novak named AFC’s best for Week 4
New York, NY (SportsNetwork.com) – Kansas City Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles, Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt and San Diego Chargers kicker Nick Novak have been selected as the AFC’s top players for Week 4 of the NFL season.
Charles scored three touchdowns in Kansas City’s 41-14 rout of New England on Monday to capture the offensive award for the fourth time in his career, tying Priest Holmes and Larry Johnson for the most among Chiefs’ running backs. He rushed for 92 yards with a score and caught three passes for 16 yards and two touchdowns.
Watt picked up the defensive honor for the third time after making five tackles and returning an interception 80 yards for a touchdown in Houston’s 23-17 win over Buffalo on Sunday. His TD came early in the third quarter and gave the Texans a lead they would not relinquish.
Novak was chosen as the top special teams player for a third time. He converted all four of his field goal attempts and each of his three PATs in San Diego’s 33-14 victory over Jacksonville.
Others considered for the offensive award were Indianapolis quarterback Andrew Luck, last week’s winner who this past Sunday threw for 393 yards and four touchdowns in a 41-17 victory over Tennessee; San Diego’s Philip Rivers, who threw for 377 yards and three scores against the Jaguars; and Baltimore receiver Steve Smith Sr., who had seven catches for 139 yards and two touchdowns in a 38-10 win over his old team, the Carolina Panthers.
Defensive nominees included Kansas City safety Husain Abdullah, who had eight tackles and a 39-yard interception return for a touchdown against the Patriots, and Miami cornerback Cortland Finnegan, who had four tackles and returned a fumble 50 yards for a touchdown in a 38-14 win over Oakland.
Indianapolis kicker Adam Vinatieri was also considered for the special teams honor after drilling a pair of field goals and all five PATs against the Titans.
