Cards’ Abraham’s season over

Tempe, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) – Just three days after he returned to the team, the Cardinals have placed pass rusher John Abraham on injured reserve due to continued symptoms from a Week 1 concussion.

Abraham failed a concussion test upon his return to the Cardinals on Tuesday and has still yet to be medically cleared by team doctors. The 15-year veteran had requested and was granted a leave of absence to deal with the injury, which occurred in Arizona’s season-opening win over San Diego on Sept. 8.

It’s possible that Abraham, the NFL’s active leader with 133 1/2 sacks, has now played his last down. The 36-year-old is in the final year of his contract and had been contemplating retirement during his brief time away from the Cardinals.

Abraham had 11 1/2 sacks to lead Arizona last season and was chosen to his fifth career Pro Bowl in 2013.

With regular punter Dave Zastudil still bothered by a groin injury that’s prevented him from kicking the season’s first two weeks, Abraham was moved to IR to clear a spot for Arizona to re-sign punter Drew Butler.

Butler served as the Cardinals’ punter during Zastudil’s absence, averaging 47.8 yards on eight attempts and placing two kicks inside the 20-yard line.
