Canada takes top spot in Group A, U.S. now 2nd in Group B

Minsk, Belarus (SportsNetwork.com) – Canada and the United States each finished the preliminary round of the 2014 World Hockey Championship with victories on Tuesday.

The Canadians grabbed the top spot in Group A with a 3-2 win over Norway. Joel Ward scored twice for Canada, including the winner on a third-period power play, and added an assist.

James Reimer turned aside 14 shots for the Canadians, who won their last six games of the round-robin after opening with a shootout loss to France. Canada will play either Finland or Latvia in Thursday’s quarterfinals.

The United States currently sits second in Group B after a 5-4 win over Germany to conclude the preliminary round. Justin Abdelkader scored twice and Johnny Gaudreau contributed a goal with three assists for the Americans.

Tim Thomas made 24 saves for the United States, which can still drop to third in Group B if Belarus beats Russia in regulation later on Tuesday.
