Arcadia, CA (SportsNetwork.com) – California Chrome, the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winner, had a five-furlong workout Saturday at Los Alamitos Race Course ahead of the Breeders’ Cup Classic on Saturday, Nov. 1 at Santa Anita.

The chestnut colt, with Victor Espinoza in the saddle, covered the five furlongs in 59 3/5 seconds.

“He worked great. We’re real happy with him. He’ll go five or six furlongs next Saturday,” said Alan Sherman, son and assistant to trainer Art Sherman:

California Chrome was the 9-10 favorite versus seven rivals in the Pennsylvania Derby on Sept. 20 when he finished sixth behind Bayern in the 1 1/8-mile stakes at Parx Racing.

Also working out Saturday was Candy Boy, third in the PA Derby. Trained by John Sadler, Candy Boy went five furlongs in 1:00.80 at Santa Anita. The 3- year-old colt is a possible starter in the $5 million Classic.

“He’s training up for it, but we’re not a definite yet,” Sadler said. “We want to look and see how it shapes up … We’re in our own back yard and we’ll make up our mind when the money is due. It’s a lot of money to run. A mile and a quarter should be good for him.

“We’ve run well in past Breeders’ Cups; we’ve had some seconds and thirds, and Candy Boy is doing well. He’s a probable at this point.”

The probable Classic favorite is another 3-year-old, Eclipse Award winner Shared Belief.

California Chrome has never faced Shared Belief, but Candy Boy was second to the 2013 champion 2-year-old in last year’s CashCall Futurity. Shared Belief and Candy Boy were both sired by Candy Ride.
