California Chrome has first workout as Horse of the Year
Los Alamitos, CA (SportsNetwork.com) – Newly crowned Horse of the Year California Chrome had a seven-furlong workout Monday at Los Alamitos.
The 4-year-old, trained by Art Sherman, covered the seven furlongs in 1:27.40 with his regular jockey Victor Espinoza riding.
“He went easy and galloped out strong,” said Alan Sherman, son of and assistant to trainer Art Sherman. “We’re real happy with the work. He’ll breeze again next Sunday.”
California Chrome was awarded the 2014 Horse of the Year honor Saturday night shortly after receiving the Eclipse Award as the year’s leading 3-year-old colt and gelding.
“It’s an honor to be nominated and to win these two prestigious awards,” co- owner Steve Coburn said.
California Chrome, winner of last year’s Kentucky Derby and Preakness, is expected to make his initial 2015 start in the $500,000 San Antonio Stakes at Santa Anita on Feb. 7.
The chestnut colt has banked $4,222,650 from 16 career starts with nine wins.
