California Chrome excellent after Belmont Stakes workout
Elmont, NY (SportsNetwork.com) – California Chrome, who goes for history in Saturday’s Belmont Stakes, is in excellent condition one day after putting in his last workout for the 146th “Test of the Champion.”
The Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winner worked four furlongs Saturday with jockey Victor Espinoza riding. The 3-year-old colt was timed in 47.69 seconds for the half-mile and galloped out six furlongs in 1:12.95 and seven furlongs in 1:26.28.
“Chrome came out of the work in great shape,” said Alan Sherman, son and assistant trainer to his father Art Sherman. “He was pulling (exercise rider) Willie (Delgado) around the shed row this morning. Everything is cold and tight and we’re ready for Saturday.”
Owned by Steven Coburn and Perry Martin, California Chrome is working on a six-race winning streak dating back to his last start of 2013. He finished his 2-year-old season by claiming the King Glorious Stakes at Hollywood Park and this year has won the California Cup Derby, San Felipe Stakes and Santa Anita Derby before winning the first two legs of racing’s Triple Crown.
