Bayern back to jogging after injury
Arcadia, CA (SportsNetwork.com) – Multiple Eclipse Award finalist Bayern has returned to the racetrack after suffering from an abscess on a hind foot.
The 4-year-old colt, owned by Kaleem Shah, is back jogging at Santa Anita after missing a scheduled workout last Saturday. Trainer Bob Baffert still has not completely ruled out running Bayern in the 1 1/8-mile San Antonio Stakes on Feb. 7.
“I’ll make the call that week,” Baffert said Friday morning. “He’s pretty fit. I’ll know more in a few days.”
Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner California Chrome and 2013 Eclipse Award winner Shared Belief are expected to start in the San Antonio at Santa Anita. California Chrome and Bayern are both finalists for 2014 Horse of the Year and champion 3-year-old.
Bayern won the 2014 Breeders’ Cup Classic on Nov. 1 at Santa Anita and earlier captured the Woody Stephens Stakes, Haskell Invitational and Pennsylvania Derby, The colt has earned $4,389,680 with six wins from 10 career races, all in 2014.
Baffert said Friday that 4-year-old Hoppertunity will not go in the San Antonio after winning the San Pasqual Stakes on Jan. 10. “It’s too soon,” he said.
