Baltacha retires from tennis

London, England (SportsNetwork.com) – Former top women’s British tennis player Elena Baltacha has decided to retire.

The 30-year-old Ukrainian-born player, who turned pro in 1997 and never reached a WTA-level final, reached the third round at Wimbledon in 2002 and at the 2005 and 2010 Australian Opens. She appeared in only four tour events this year, going 2-4, including an opening-round loss at Wimbledon.

Baltacha reached a career-high ranking of No. 49 in 2010.
