Adele Breaks Billboard Record with ’21’

Adele climbed the charts with her second album, 21, a few months ago. But it’s the fact that she’s stayed at the top of the charts for the past 24 weeks (that’s 6 whole months!) that’s really got people talking and paying more attention to Adele.

The past 24 weeks have definitely been exciting ones for Adele; not only has she been in the top three of the Billboard 200 for all of those weeks, but for twelve of them she’s been in the number one spot. That’s the longest time any one artist has sat in that spot in over ten years, since Santana took it with his Supernatural album in 2000. And to earn her that spot, Adele’s album 21 has just went triple-platinum, and she’s sold over 76,000 copies.

But Billboard records aren’t the only ones that Adele is breaking. 21 was also recently named the biggest-selling digital album in the U.S., just one week after Eminem’s Recovery was named the first album to sell one million digital copies.

But although the success of her second album is definitely surpassing that of her first, it was her debut album that really gave Adele her first taste of stardom; Chasing Pavements earned Adele a Grammy for both Best New Artist, and Best Female Pop Performance. A year later, her name is being associated with huge stars like Santana and Eminem. Those are some pretty big props for a young British artist who’s trying to stand out among big names like Katy Perry and Lady Gaga!
