A Broadway Favorite for the Family — Cinderella!
If you’re taking your girl to see the Broadway production of Cinderella taking place at the Broadway Theater, she won’t be disappointed. With dazzling sets, gorgeous costumes that should actually be nominated for a Tony, fetching musical numbers, and plenty of tiaras to spare, she won’t be disappointed. If however, you’re going to see the traditional story play out just as it was originally written, you might be a bit disappointed. While the main plot still rings true, it’s been given twists that bring it into the modern era.
Laura Osens and Santino Fontana, respectively, take on the roles of Cinderella and her Prince Charming, and they do a brilliant job of it, and seem perfectly suited to the modern turns this story is taking. This story, without the Prince’s parents present, instead focuses on how the Prince is being fooled by someone in his kingdom to pass unjust bills and laws. Once at the ball made famous by the story, Cinderella whispers to her Prince that he needs “to open your eyes to what’s happening in your kingdom.” And that actually becomes the focus instead of glass slippers, which manage to stay on Cinderella’s feet the entire time.
Along with the new politically-charged story are songs to match. While the old classics such as “Bibbity Bobbity Boo” are still there, you’ll also be able to hear new tunes added to the score including “Now Is the Time” and others.
This story, as well as the songs, don’t just speak of unrequited love, but also a moral good, courage to stand in the face of evil, and taking charge of your own destiny. It’s all very unlike the story written so many years ago, and the cast pulls it off magnificently.
