49ers announce 2015 coaching staff
Santa Clara, CA (SportsNetwork.com) – San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Tomsula formally announced the team’s coaching staff on Monday.
“Our staff is a collection of passionate coaches who have wide-ranging experience at every level of the game,” said Tomsula. “This is a group of talented communicators who take great pride in helping players maximize their abilities. Throughout the staff you see bright, high-energy coaches who enjoy taking a hands-on approach to teaching the game. We are all looking forward to getting to work.”
Offensive coordinator Geep Chryst and defensive coordinator Eric Mangini were both on the 49ers staff in 2014 in different jobs.
Mangini spent the past two years on the offensive side of the ball, while Chryst was the team’s quarterbacks coach for the past four seasons.
The 44-year-old Mangini was the Patriots’ defensive backs coach (2000-04) before being promoted to New England’s defensive coordinator in 2005. He then served as the head coach of the Jets (2006-08) and the Browns (2009-10).
Chryst will be an NFL offensive coordinator for the second time in his coaching career. He held the play-calling duties for the San Diego Chargers in 1999 and 2000, all while serving as the team’s quarterbacks coach.
Chryst has spent 28 seasons in the coaching profession, including 23 on the NFL level with Chicago, Arizona, San Diego, Carolina and San Francisco. His experiences range from working with quarterbacks, running backs, wide receivers, tight ends and offensive linemen.
Running backs coach Tom Rathman, defensive assistant Ejiro Evero and offensive assistant D.J. Boldin stay in the same roles. Ronald Curry will return and coach wide receivers along with Adam Henry while Mick Lombardi will move from an offensive to a defensive assistant role.
The new arrivals are special teams coordinator Thomas McGaughey Jr., tight ends coach Tony Sparano, offensive line coach Chris Foerster, quarterbacks coach Steve Logan, assistant offensive line coach Eric Wolford, defensive line coach Scott Brown, linebackers coach Clancy Pendergast, secondary coach Tim Lewis, senior defensive assistant/linebackers coach Jason Tarver, defensive assistant Aubrayo Franklin and assistant special team coach Richard Hightower.
