In the third inning, Pittsburgh's Jordy Mercer hit a two-run home run off Hamels, the subject of widespread trade rumors throughout this offseason.
The Phillies took the lead with a two-run sixth inning capped off by Jeff Francoeur's two-out RBI single off Pirates lefty Jeff Locke. Charlie Morton started for Pittsburgh and allowed a run in three innings.
Although the game was over after 8 1/2 innings, the teams agreed to complete the ninth so Pirates pitcher Brad Lincoln could get some work. Domonic Brown homered off Lincoln in the unofficial inning.
