New York Mets VS. Miami Marlins

(SportsNetwork.com) - Jacob deGrom is hitting the Rookie of the Year gas pedal at precisely the right time.

The New York right-hander gets a chance to add another line to his qualifications for the National League award on Monday night, when the Mets host the Miami Marlins in the opener of a three-game series at Citi Field.

No earned runs have been tallied against deGrom in his last 22 innings, including an eight-inning stint against Colorado on Tuesday in which he allowed three hits and struck out nine in a 2-0 Mets win.

The victory boosted him to 7-1 over his last 10 starts, a stretch in which his earned run average is 1.60. He's faced the Marlins three times and is 2-0 with an even stingier 0.45 ERA in 20 innings while recording 21 strikeouts.

The Marlins go with righty Jarred Cosart, who was on a five-start unbeaten run of his own before dropping a 4-1 decision to Milwaukee on Wednesday.

He gave up just one earned run in six innings and allowed four hits.

"This guy has got good stuff and has pitched really, really well," manager Mike Redmond said.

In seven starts since arriving in a trade with Houston, Cosart hasn't walked any more than two batters. In nearly half of his 20 starts to begin the season with the Astros, he'd walked three or more.

"You can't walk two guys in a Major League Baseball game and expect for the other team not to score and then expect to have a chance to win," Cosart said.

He has never faced the Mets.

New York has scored just 21 runs in nine games, but has won seven of its last eight against the Marlins at home.

On Sunday in Philadelphia, the Marlins scored four runs in the ninth inning to rally for a 5-4 win over the Phillies in the finale of a three-game set. Phillies closer Jonathan Papelbon (2-3) came on in the ninth with his club up by three. He allowed a double to Jarrod Saltalamacchia, a walk to Enrique Hernandez and a single to Adeiny Hechavarria to begin the inning.

Jordany Valdespin worked a 12-pitch at-bat that culminated into an RBI groundout, then Christian Yelich and Justin Bour each delivered run-scoring singles to tie the game.

Papelbon got a timely strikeout of Casey McGehee before uncorking a wild pitch that allowed Yelich to cross home for the winning run.

Anthony DeSclafani (2-2) earned the win for pitching the eighth and Steve Cishek struck out the side in the ninth following a walk and single to start the inning for his 35th save of the season. Miami snapped its four-game losing streak.

In New York, Wilson Ramos' two-run home run led the Washington Nationals in a 3-0 win over the Mets in the finale of a four-game set.

Jon Niese (8-11) allowed two runs on six hits over seven innings for the Mets.
