Pittsburgh Pirates (73-68) at Chicago Cubs (64-78), 2:20 p.m. (ET)
(SportsNetwork.com) - The Pittsburgh Pirates go for a sweep of the Chicago Cubs when the two NL Central rivals conclude a three-game set Sunday at Wrigley Field.
Friday's series opener was suspended because of rain and the teams were tied 3-3 in the top of the seventh inning when the game was delayed for a second time because of bad weather.
The game resumed Saturday afternoon and the Pirates posted a 5-3 victory in 11 innings. They then recorded a 5-0 win in the nightcap and sit 4 1/2 games behind St. Louis for the NL Central lead. Pittsburgh is also just a half-game back for the second wild card berth.
Pittsburgh is 2-3 on a 10-game road trip and will send Gerrit Cole to the mound Sunday. He is 7-5 with a 3.86 earned run average and 1-2 in his last three decisions. Cole is 4-4 in eight road starts and has won all three of his outings against the Cubs.
The Pirates will visit Philadelphia for four games after this Windy City series.
Chicago has lost back-to-back games after sweeping Milwaukee in three.
Felix Doubront allowed two runs in five innings to take the loss in last night's second contest and was outdueled by Pirates starter Francisco Liriano. Liriano struck out nine batters over six scoreless innings.
Travis Wood draws the start Sunday for the Cubs and is 8-11 with a 4.81 ERA. Wood has faced Pittsburgh 13 times (12 starts) in his career and is 5-6 with a 3.43 ERA.
Pittsburgh is 11-4 against Chicago this season and will host the Cubs for three games from Sept. 12-14 at PNC Park.
