Recap: Texas A&M vs. Lamar
College Station, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Kenny Hill threw for 283 yards and four touchdowns, and the No. 9 Texas A&M Aggies cruised past the Lamar Cardinals, 73-3, at Kyle Field on Saturday.
Hill followed up his monster effort in the Aggies' 52-28 season-opening win over South Carolina by converting 17-of-26 passes.
The sensational sophomore has now passed for 794 yards and seven touchdowns in his first two collegiate starts. He didn't play in the final series of the second quarter and sat the entire fourth quarter in the lopsided win.
Kyle Allen went 12-of-16 for 122 yards, two touchdowns and an interception in his College Station debut in relief of Hill.
"Kyle made a mistake early but bounced back," said Texas A&M head coach Kevin Sumlin. "The biggest thing that I see is how guys are really, really interested in the success of each other. I watch Kenny throw touchdowns and Kyle congratulate him. Before I could get to Kyle after his touchdown pass, Ken ran right by me and they were up in the air back bumping. And that's genuine."
Brice Dolezal led Texas A&M (2-0) with 86 yards rushing and added a touchdown, while James White rushed for 62 yards and two scores.
Caleb Berry had a rough night for Lamar (1-1), converting just 16-of-42 passes for 153 yards with an interception in the setback.
The Aggies scored on their first four offensive possessions highlighted by the passing from Hill, whose first pass of the night went for 44 yards to Speedy Noil. Trey Williams then rushed for a 33-yard touchdown two plays later to open the scoring.
Lamar responded with a 72-yard drive that culminated in a 20-yard field goal by Josh Davis that cut the deficit to 7-3.
Texas A&M would lock down on defense from there.
Hill hooked up with Ricky Seals-Jones for a 24-yard score before both teams traded turnovers. Brandon Williams fumbled a return after the Aggies forced a punt, but Berry's first pass following the turnover was intercepted.
Texas A&M scored in just under a minute with Hill hitting Sabian Holmes for a 51-yard touchdown. Hill rolled to his left on the play and hit a wide-open Holmes, who sprinted in from 30-plus yards out for a 21-3 advantage.
Noil returned a punt for 67 yards later in the second quarter that set up a 20-yard field goal from Josh Lambo.
It then took Hill just three passes to reach the end zone on his last series of the first half. He converted a 27-yard pass to Edward Pope, a 16-yard strike to Holmes and a 9-yard touchdown pass to Pope for a 31-3 lead.
Allen entered for Hill late in the second and was intercepted on his opening series under center. Lamar couldn't get any points out of the turnover, though, as Davis' kick from 41 yards out was wide as time expired in the half.
Hill returned to the field for Texas A&M's opening possession of the second half. After a 53-yard kickoff return from Noil put the ball at the Lamar 25, Hill capped the short drive with an 18-yard touchdown pass to Malcome Kennedy.
Another turnover, a fumble by Devonn Brown, on a punt return gave the Aggies another short field. Hill's 12-yard toss to Josh Reynolds set up White's 1- yard score for a 45-3 lead with just over seven minutes to play in the third.
Allen again replaced Hill at quarterback in the fourth, and White capped another scoring march early in the frame with a 3-yard run.
Allen tossed his first collegiate touchdown, a 2-yard conversion to Boone Niederhofer, with 8 1/2 minutes to go in the fourth. LaQuvionte Gonzalez caught a 33-yard touchdown from Allen later on and Dolezal's 41-yard rushing touchdown accounted for the final margin.
