Recap: Miss State vs. UAB
Starkville, MS (SportsNetwork.com) - Dak Prescott was responsible for five total touchdowns as he led the Mississippi State Bulldogs to a 47-34 victory over the UAB Blazers at Davis Wade Stadium.
Prescott threw for 211 yards and four scores on 12-of-25 passing and also recorded 111 yards and a touchdown on the ground for Mississippi State (2-0). Josh Robinson pounded out 124 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries and Robert Johnson turned two receptions into 75 yards and a score.
Cody Clements and Jeremiah Briscoe shared time at quarterback for UAB (1-1). Clements started the game and threw for 167 yards and a touchdown to match an interception on 10-of-18 passing. Briscoe finished with 231 yards and two scores despite hitting on just 5-of-15 attempts. Jamarcus Nelson caught five passes for 144 yards and a score and Jordan Howard led the Blazers with 89 yards rushing and a score on 24 carries.
The Bulldogs were on the scoreboard before the first minute was over as Prescott threw a 68-yard touchdown pass to Robert Johnson on the third play of the game.
A 44-yard field goal from Ty Long gave the Blazers their first points.
A 21-yard interception return for a touchdown by Preston Smith pushed Mississippi State to a 13-3 lead, but Howard's two-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter kept UAB within striking distance.
Just over a minute later the Blazers took the lead on an 88-yard touchdown pass from Briscoe to Nelson.
It wasn't long before Mississippi State went back in front, as Robinson scored recorded a 17-yard touchdown run on the ensuing drive. However, the Bulldogs failed to convert on the extra point attempt, putting the score at 19-17.
UAB took advantage when Long came through with a 46-yard field goal midway through the second quarter.
The back-and-forth quarter continued with a 20-yard touchdown pass from Prescott to Gus Walley.
The Bulldogs came out of the half firing, with Prescott scoring on a four-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter.
Prescott then threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Joe Morrow midway through the period.
Clements stopped the bleeding a bit for UAB when he connected with Josh Magee for an 81-yard touchdown pass.
However, Prescott did not let up, throwing an eight-yard touchdown pass to De'Runnya Wilson less than four minutes later.
There would be no more scoring the rest of the way except for a 75-yard touchdown pass from Briscoe to Quincy Perdue with less than a minute left to play, which did not make a difference in the outcome.
Despite the loss, UAB had the edge in total offense (548-516). Mississippi State scored touchdowns on all five of its red zone trips.
