Recap: Youngstown St vs. Kent State
Youngstown, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Jimmy Hall netted 14 points on 6-of-9 from the field, as the Kent State Golden Flashes topped the Youngstown State Penguins, 69-61, in a non-conference clash at the Beeghly Center.
Kris Brewer had 12 points and five assists for the Golden Flashes (1-0), who opened their campaign on a positive note. Devareaux Manley tallied 12 points coming off the bench.
Shawn Amiker shot 7-of-15 from the floor, recording a double-double with a game-high 20 points and 10 rebounds for the Penguins (0-1). Bobby Hain followed with 17 points in the losing effort.
The visitors shot a confident 52.4 percent from the field in the first half of play, including 6-of-12 from the perimeter. The Penguins kept it close, shooting 41.9 percent from the floor, but shot just 12.5 percent from beyond the arc (1-of-8). Kent State led 35-33 at the halfway mark.
In the second half, YSU shot a mere 32.3 percent from the field, while Kent State stayed consistent at 52.2 percent. The Golden Flashes led by as many as 11, inside the final two minutes.
Perimeter shooting was a major problem for the Penguins, as they sank just 2-of-18 from beyond the arc. The visitors also got a major boost from the bench, which provided 26 points in the win.
