YALE BULLDOGS

Yale Bulldogs

Yale Bulldogs VS. Penn Quakers

Penn (6-13) at Yale (11-9)

GAME NOTES: The Yale Bulldogs will attempt to keep their season-long winning streak alive on Friday night when they play host to the Penn Quakers in Ivy League action at the Lee Amphitheater.

Penn has not fared well in terms of the season as a whole, as it sits with just a 6-13 record, but things have been looking up since the start of league play with a 3-2 mark. The Quakers have won back-to-back games over Cornell (90-83) and Columbia (68-60), but both victories came at home and they are a mere 1-8 on the road.

Yale has won four straight games, most recently downing Harvard on the road last Saturday, 74-67, to surge into a tie for first place in the Ivy League with the Crimson at 5-1. The Bulldogs are 11-9 this season, which includes a 6-2 ledger at Lee Amphitheater.

Penn has a convincing 146-72 advantage over Yale in the all-time series between these longtime rivals, although the Bulldogs claimed both matchups last season.

The Quakers opened up a 10-point halftime lead in their most recent game and extended that advantage to as many as 16 points down the stretch in their victory over Columbia, as they shot a lofty 54.2 percent from the field and earned a 37-26 advantage in the rebounding battle. Fran Dougherty shot 10- of-14 from the field for 23 points to go with 12 rebounds in a performance that helped him earn the Ivy League Player of the week. Tony Hicks chipped in 13 points, and while Miles Cartwright had just five points, he handed out six assists and swiped two steals.

On the season, Penn outshoots its opposition from the field, 45.3 percent to 42.4 percent, but it still scores just 70.8 ppg while allowing 76.9 ppg due to its negative margins in the turnover (-2.7) and rebounding (-2.5) battles as well as its poor 3-point percentage defense (.396). Hicks scores a team-best 15.3 ppg, Dougherty (12.6 ppg, 7.4 rpg) and Darien Nelson-Henry (10.7 ppg, 6.0 rpg) are mainstays in the frontcourt and Cartwright chips in 11.8 ppg.

The Bulldogs shocked Harvard on the road last weekend, running out to a four- point halftime lead and never relinquishing that advantage for the rest of the game. They shot a stellar 51.2 percent from the field on the evening, compared to just 39 percent for the Crimson, and also outscored them from the free- throw line, 24-14. Justin Sears spearheaded the effort with 21 points and 11 rebounds, while Armani Cotton also tallied a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Javier Duren rounded out the impressive performance with 15 points.

Yale might not wow anyone with its offensive attack, as it shoots 43 percent from the field for 68.4 ppg, but it has been enough to support itself given that it allows just 67.4 ppg on the other end of the floor. Sears has established himself as one of the Ivy's best players, posting 15.2 ppg on 48.8 percent field goal shooting to go with 7.0 rpg, 1.8 bpg and 1.4 spg. Dunn is the only other player in double figures with 12.8 ppg.

Both teams are playing at the top of their respective games at the moment, but the Bulldogs are riding high after knocking off Harvard last week and will likely continue their run in their return home.
