Long Beach State (1-1) at Xavier (1-0)
GAME NOTES: In the second part of a season-opening, four-game homestand the Xavier Musketeers clash with the Long Beach State 49ers at the Cintas Center as part of the Wooden Legacy.
The 49ers had a busy opening weekend, playing two games in as many days. They began the campaign with a 95-90 letdown at BYU before returning home to post a 74-64 victory over San Francisco State on Saturday. LBSU has been enduring a backwards slide over the last few seasons, dropping to 15-17 overall in 2013-14 following three straight campaigns of at least 19 wins. They have tough tests against Kansas State and UCLA on the horizon.
Xavier only played one game over the weekend, but it certainly made a statement in it, routing Northern Arizona in a 90-63 final at home. The Musketeers are now in their second season as a member of the Big East Conference, and they went 21-13 overall in their debut last season. Home tests against Stephen F. Austin and Murray State await following this matchup.
LBSU claimed a 68-58 win over Xavier as part of the Diamond Head Classic in Honolulu during the 2011-12 season. That is the only previous meeting between the two schools.
In its first two games, LBSU has had to play vastly different styles. In the opener against BYU, the 49ers were involved in a high-octane shootout, while the contest with San Francisco State featured a slower pace and far less offense. One thing that has stayed the same is LBSU's efficient shooting. The 49ers took 41 shots against San Francisco State, connecting on 53.7 percent of those attempts, following a 54.1 percent performance against the Cougars.
Mike Caffey sits atop the leader board in terms of scoring for LBSU, as he poured in 26 points in the loss to BYU and followed that up with a more modest 13-point effort against San Francisco State. Caffey has done more than score. totaling 11 assists, nine rebounds and eight steals in the first two games. McKay LaSalle (14 ppg) and David Samuels (11 ppg) are averaging double figures in the early going as well. LaSalle scored 16 and 12 points, respectively, in the first two games, while Samuels netted team-high 14 points in the win over San Francisco State after an eight-point showing against the Cougars.
In just one game, Xavier has already matched its total of 90-point contests from last season, as it overpowered NAU thanks to an incredible shooting performance. The Musketeers drained 66.7 percent of their field goal attempts in the victory, while scoring 54 points in the paint. They also earned assists on 22 of their 36 field goal attempts, although 16 turnovers certainly leaves room for improvement.
Matt Stainbrook was a force at both ends of the floor, as he made the most of limited time in the blowout victory, scoring 18 points on 7-of-8 shooting to go with nine rebounds and three blocks in just 19 minutes. Stainbrook is the only double-digit scorer left from last season's team, with Semaj Christon (17 ppg, 4.2 apg) and Justin Martin (11.7 ppg) both gone. Trevon Bluiett matched Stainbrook in terms of points, netting 18 on 6-of-8 shooting. Jalen Reynolds scored 16 points off the bench and Myles Davis chipped in 13, also doing so as a reserve.
Even in their first game without Christon and Martin, the Musketeers proved they can still put points on the board. Caffey and company may be able to keep up for a while, but expect the hosts to pull away for the win.
