XAVIER MUSKETEERS

Xavier Musketeers

Xavier Musketeers VS. IUPU-Indianapolis Jaguars

IUPUI (2-5) at Xavier (6-2)

GAME NOTES: The Xavier Musketeers will finish up a quick homestand on Tuesday when they host the IUPUI Jaguars in a non-conference matchup at the Cintas Center.

IUPUI will be attempting to end a three-game losing streak in this contest, its second straight on the road. The Jaguars were eviscerated at Evansville last time out (89-62), dropping them to 2-5 overall. They will return home to take on Eastern Kentucky next.

Xavier took a two-game losing streak into its most recent outing against Alabama. However, the Musketeers ended the slide with a convincing win (97-84), improving to 6-2 overall and 5-0 at home in the process. They will visit Missouri and Auburn in their next two games.

These teams have not met since Xavier ran away with a 104-67 victory during the 1994-95 season. The Musketeers own a 4-0 all-time series lead.

IUPUI had trouble keeping up with the relentless pace Evansville set on offense. The Jaguars managed to connect on only 40.7 percent of their field goal tries and go 12-of-21 at the free-throw line. Meanwhile, the Purple Aces poured in 56.6 percent of their attempts from the field, while getting 25- of-31 foul shots to fall. The Jaguars were outscored in the paint (48-22) and off of turnovers (23-13) as well. Leo Svete netted 17 points off the bench as the club's top scorer in the loss.

Marcellus Barksdale (10 ppg) is the only player averaging in double figures for IUPUI and he is doing so just barely, connecting on a meager 36.4 percent of his field goal tries. P.J. Boutte (9.1 ppg, 4.6 apg) is the second option and the team's leader in assists, but he is shooting even worse than Barksdale (.313). With so few scoring threats on the roster, it is a wonder the Jaguars are even able to manage 64.1 points per game.

Xavier had a much different interaction with Alabama than IUPUI had with Evansville. The Musketeers buried 56.6 percent of their shots from the field, including an 11-of-21 effort from 3-point range. They also scored 17 points off of turnovers and claimed a 32-22 edge on the glass. It was really a team effort in terms of scoring, with Myles Davis leading six players in double figures with 18 points.

An offensive clinic has been taking place for Xavier, which is putting up a lofty 85.3 points per game on 52.5 percent shooting, ranking among the top-10 teams in the country in each category. Matt Stainbrook (15.2 ppg, 7.4 rpg) and Trevon Bluiett (15 ppg) are the two top scoring threats on a roster that features seven players averaging at least seven points per game. Davis (11.1 ppg) has been a nice option off the bench and Dee Davis (8.2 ppg, 6.2 apg) makes sure to keep everyone involved with his ability to move the ball. Davis finished with 10 points and eight assists in the win over Alabama.

Simply put, IUPUI does not have nearly enough firepower to keep up with the high-scoring Musketeers.
