Utah State (18-10) at Wyoming (21-8)
GAME NOTES: The Utah State Aggies try to run their win streak to seven in a row as they clash with the Wyoming Cowboys in a Mountain West Conference bout at Arena-Auditorium on Wednesday night.
For the Aggies, this is the last road game of the regular season, but still they have a home date versus Colorado State this weekend before the start of the conference tournament. Head coach Stew Morrill, who will be retiring at the conclusion of the 2014-15 campaign, has managed to keep USU in the hunt for a top spot in the upcoming conference tournament, thanks to an 11-5 mark at the moment, tying them with the aforementioned Rams for third place in the standings.
Last weekend, the Aggies dismantled Air Force at Clune Arena, 74-60, giving them a record of 5-3 in conference road games.
As for the Cowboys, this is their final game of the regular season in Laramie, a place where they've won all but two of their 18 contests. However, the team was on the road in Las Vegas last Saturday and suffered a 69-57 setback to UNLV, even with Larry Nance Jr. back on the floor following an illness. Wyoming is now 10-6 in league play, which has it fifth in the standings.
Wyoming owns a 45-25 advantage in the all-time series between the squads, although the Aggies won the first meeting of the campaign back in late January by a score of 56-44 at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum.
Utah State shot a woeful 2-of-13 behind the 3-point line in the first half against the Falcons over the weekend, finishing 8-of-26 on the perimeter, but at the same time held the hosts to just 4-of-21 on the outside in order to pick up the double-digit win. Except for Darius Perkins who tallied only four points, missing all six of his field goal tries, every starter for USU finished in double figures led by Julion Pearre with 21 points and Chris Smith 16. Before fouling out, David Collette tacked on 13 points, five boards and three blocked shots, while Jalen Moore responded with 10 points ands a team- best 10 boards.
Moore, who has recorded four double-doubles on the campaign, has scored in double figures in all but two games and continues to be the force on offense in conference play with 15.3 ppg. Not only is Moore shooting an impressive 45.2 percent from 3-point range in those league bouts, he is also first on the team with 6.5 rpg and somehow is averaging barely one personal foul per contest. Smith checks in with 12.9 ppg and Collette another 11.9 ppg, the latter having fouled out of five contests.
Josh Adams cranked out a game-high 24 points on the road against UNLV, hitting 4-of-8 shots behind the 3-point line, but even that effort was not good enough to get the Cowboys back into the win column on Saturday at the Thomas & Mack Center. Derek Cooke Jr. added 10 points and seven rebounds, while Nance Jr, accounted for nine points and just as many rebounds, but he shot only 3-of-10 from the field in the losing cause.
Before coming down with mononucleosis, Nance Jr. scored in double figures in all but four games, but since his return he has tallied just nine apiece versus both the Runnin' Rebels and Fresno State, which hints that perhaps he is not back at 100 percent yet. Still, having him back on the floor is crucial for the Pokes because he not only scores 17.1 ppg and clears 8.5 rpg in conference play, he also causes opponents to think twice about bringing the ball into the paint, as does Cooke Jr. who is picking up 6.8 rpg and has blocked 18 shots.
Everything seems to be clicking at just the right time for the Aggies, but don't think for a moment that Wyoming will go down without a fight. If Nance Jr. can show more energy in this meeting perhaps the host will be able to defend their home floor, but it won't be easy.
