Detroit (13-15) at Wright State (15-13)
GAME NOTES: A couple of teams shooting for consecutive wins take to the floor at the Nutter Center tonight, as the Wright State Raiders host fellow Horizon League member Detroit.
The Titans, winners of three of their last four but still a game under .500 in conference play at 6-7, extinguished the Flames of Illinois-Chicago earlier this week at UIC Pavilion by a score of 65-59. It was just the fifth true road win of 2013-14 for the program.
Meanwhile, the Raiders seem to have regained their footing after losing three consecutive decisions. The squad, currently 7-6 in league action, posting a narrow 72-71 triumph over Oakland last Sunday at the O'rena in Michigan. The victory was the second in the last three outings for the squad.
In terms of the all-time series between these two teams, the Titans own a 25-22 advantage, thanks in part to a 58-53 victory at Calihan Hall earlier this season.
Juwan Howard Jr. scored 20 points, shooting 11-of-13 at the free-throw line, but just 4-of-14 from the floor, as the Titans captured a rare road win against UIC the last time out. Jarod Williams added 17 points and Carlton Brundidge 15 as the latter converted all but one of his seven field goal attempts off the bench for a squad that finished the night at 40.8 percent from the floor.
As a starter in all 28 games this season, it only makes sense that Howard Jr. is the leading scorer for Detroit with his 18.7 ppg, having converted a solid 82.6 percent of his chances at the charity stripe. Evan Bruinsma accounts for another 12.3 ppg and is first on the glass with 7.7 rpg, the latter stat being a clear indication that his strength is in the paint and not out on the perimeter where he has converted just 29.3 percent of his 3-point tries coming into action tonight.
A short floater in the lane by AJ Pacher with 1.6 seconds remaining pushed the Wright State Raiders to a thrilling one-point win over the Oakland Golden Grizzlies at the O'rena last Sunday. Pacher finished with a double-double consisting of 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Raiders. Cole Darling scored a game-high 21 points for the visitors, adding six boards and four assists, while Jerran Young accounted for 11 points and seven rebounds before fouling out. Wright State managed to pull out the win despite shooting only 17-of-28 at the charity stripe and suffering 19 turnovers.
Over the course of 13 conference games, Darling stands as the only double- digit scorer for the program with his 10.1 ppg, which makes sense since the Raiders are generating only 64.8 ppg. Clearly, WSU is not a high-flying offensive squad, but at least the defense has managed to limit league foes to only 62.3 ppg at this stage of the season.
Winning all but two of 13 games at home this season, the Raiders seem to be quite comfortable in the Nutter Center no matter who comes calling these days. The Titans may have come up with a rare road win a few nights back, but to expect that to happen again right now is asking a lot of the Detroit squad.
