IUPUI (0-2) at Milwaukee (1-1)
GAME NOTES: The Milwaukee Panthers will wrap up a two-game homestand on Wednesday night, as they take on the IUPUI Jaguars in non-conference action at UW-Milwaukee Panther Arena.
IUPUI experienced a dreadful 6-26 record a season ago and has set an unfortunately similar trend early in the new campaign with two straight losses to Indiana State (79-66 in OT) and Purdue (77-57).
Milwaukee, the reigning Horizon League champion, started the season off with a difficult road test at Auburn and fell on the wrong end of an 83-73 final, but it got back on the winning track in its home opener on Monday night against Minnesota-Crookston, 75-54.
Since winning the very first meeting between the schools, IUPUI has lost each of the next four matchups to Milwaukee.
The Jaguars were outmatched by their intrastate rival Purdue in their most recent game, as they were outshot from the field, 50 percent to 41.3 percent, and committed a game-high 21 turnovers in the 20-point setback. Leo Svete and D.J. McCall both saw extended time off the bench in the lopsided affair and each scored 14 points. P.J. Boutte tallied eight points and six assists, although he shot only 2-of-12 from the field.
IUPUI is shooting just 37.7 percent from the field for 61.5 ppg through two contests, while its opponents have performed much better (.450 FG percentage, 78.0 ppg). Svete is the only player to average in double figures with 10.0 ppg, and he's made 6-of-12 from 3-point range. Boutte (8.5 ppg) handed out six assists in both games, and DavRon (5.0 ppg) hauls in a team-best 8.0 rpg.
The Panthers did what was expected of them against lesser competition earlier in the week in capturing a 19-point victory. Although they made good on less than 42 percent of their shots overall, they made up for it by knocking down 12-of-28 from beyond the arc. Pacing four players in double figures was Steve McWhorter, who scored 17 points to go with seven rebounds. Matt Tiby logged 12 points and seven boards, while J.J. Panoske and Cody Wichmann netted 10 apiece.
Milwaukee is scoring 74.0 ppg on 46.4 percent field goal shooting, and its defensive numbers (.398 FG percentage, 68.5 ppg) are difficult to gauge with a small sample size considering its one great performance and one poor showing. Seven players score at least 7.0 ppg, led by Akeem Springs and his 14.0 ppg, although he's been ice cold at 33.3 percent field goal shooting (including 1- of-11 from 3-point range). McWhorter (11.5 ppg, 5.0 rpg, 2.0 apg) and Tiby (10.0 ppg, 5.5 rpg, 3.0 apg) are both well-rounded performers.
At home against a lackluster IUPUI squad, the Panthers will have no problem surging to 2-1.
