William & Mary Tribe VS. Wofford Terriers

Wofford (5-1) at William & Mary (4-1)

GAME NOTES: The Wofford Terriers will put their five-game winning streak on the line, as they invade Kaplan Arena for a non-conference matchup against the William & Mary Tribe.

The Terriers are off to a 5-1 start for the first time in their Division I history, which dates back to the 1997-98 campaign. Since suffering a 15-point setback to Stanford in its season opener, Wofford has defeated Iona, Fairfield, South Dakota, Sam Houston State and Division II foe Ohio Valley. Coach Mike Young's squad has been relentless at the defensive end of the court. The Terriers are limiting the opposition to 41 percent shooting from the floor, including a 24 percent clip from beyond the arc, while leading all Southern Conference schools in scoring defense at only 59.7 ppg.

The Tribe have reeled off four victories in a row since falling at Florida (68-45) in their inaugural outing of the season. William & Mary's triumphs include Howard (56-49), Bluefield College (100-57), Rice (69-65) and Western Illinois (83-49). The Tribe are off to their best start since the 2005-06 campaign. Like the visitors, W&M has also been stingy defensively, ranking second in the Colonial Athletic Association in scoring defense (57.6 ppg) and field goal percentage defense (.375). The Tribe have been even more impressive at home, holding their guests to 51.7 ppg on 32.9 percent field goal efficiency.

William & Mary took a 2-1 all-time series lead with a 63-60 victory at Wofford last season.

Offensively, Wofford is netting 69.5 ppg on a league-leading 48.6 percent efficiency from the field. Senior guard Karl Cochran earned the SoCon Player of the Week award after averaging 18.3 points, 6.5 rebounds and 1.8 steals during the Terriers' 4-0 week. Cochran erupted for a career-high 31 points on 11-of-21 shooting from the floor versus South Dakota during that stretch. The Tribe will also have to deal with junior guard Spencer Collins, who has heated up after a slow start to the season. Collins has hit on 11-of-15 field goal attempts over his last two games. In the front court, junior forward Justin Gordon has been a spark plug with 10.5 ppg while averaging 20.2 minutes per outing. Wofford could get even better if senior Lee Skinner gets into a groove. The 6-foot-6 Skinner's early performance in 2014-15 (8.7 ppg, .460 FG, 6.0 rpg) is disappointing considering he posted 11.1 ppg on 47.9 percent shooting from the field and grabbed 8.5 rpg as a junior.

Coach Tony Shaver's backcourt is one of the best in the mid-major ranks. The Tribe are led by Preseason CAA Player of the Year Marcus Thornton, who has been quiet by his standards thus far with 15.4 ppg on 39.7 percent shooting from the field. Thornton is nearly impossible to contain, as he has scored in double figures in 64 out of his last 67 contests. Sophomores Omar Prewitt (12 ppg, 3.6 rpg) and Daniel Dixon (10.4 ppg) are both capable scorers who make it very difficult to offer help on Thornton. Junior Terry Tarpey (8.0 ppg, 4.5 apg) has played a point-forward role, grabbing 7.5 rpg while ranking seventh nationally in assist-to-turnover ratio (9.0).

W&M has a definite size advantage over the visitors, but the Terriers' lack of imposing big men in the paint has not slowed them down to this point. Wofford and the Tribe are extremely similar in that they pride themselves on tough defense and both possess a superstar guard capable of carrying the load offensively.
