Northeastern (9-19) at William & Mary (16-10)
GAME NOTES: Currently in third place in the Colonial Athletic Association, the William & Mary Tribe aim to rebound from a blowout loss earlier this week when they take on the Northeastern Huskies this afternoon at Kaplan Arena.
This will be the third game of the week for William & Mary. The Tribe powered past UNC Wilmington, 93-70 on Monday, but two nights later were dealt an 87-54 loss at the College of Charleston. Tim Rusthoven and Omar Prewitt both netted 13 points for the Tribe in the game against the Cougars.
Marcus Thornton, who was limited to nine points on 3-of-12 shooting in the last game for the Tribe, leads the team in scoring at 18.8 ppg. Rusthoven (12.3 ppg), Prewitt (11.5 ppg) and Britt (10.3 ppg) are part of a team that ranks third in the CAA in offense at 72.8 ppg. The squad is shooting 47 percent from the field, and 39.6 percent from beyond the 3-point arc, which is both tops in the conference. On the other side of the coin, the Tribe allow teams to shoot 46.7 percent overall and 37.9 percent from 3-point range, which is last in the CAA as far as defense is concerned.
Few mistakes are a big reason why the Tribe have been successful this season. They finished with five turnovers for the fourth time this season at Charleston. William & Mary has turned the ball over 10 or fewer times in eight of the last 10 contests.
The Huskies have dropped three of their last four contests, including Thursday's 79-70 home setback against Towson. T.J. Williams had 17 points as he shot a perfect 6-of-6 from the floor and 4-of-4 at the free-throw line for the hosts. Scott Eatherton just missed out on another double-double with 15 points and a game-high nine rebounds, while David Walker and Reggie Spencer accounted for 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Eatherton (16.1 ppg, 10.2 rpg), who has scored in double figures in 13 of his last 14 games, ranks second in the CAA in rebounding. Walker (11.6 ppg) is the only other scorer in double figures for the Huskies, who are sixth in the CAA at 65.1 ppg. Bill Coen's team is also getting big contributions from Spencer, who is second in rebounding (6.8) and third in scoring (9.4) in the conference.
Northeastern leads the all-time series 8-7, but the Tribe holds a 5-1 edge in Williamsburg. The Tribe will also aim to sweep the season series after delivering an 82-70 road win on Feb. 8. The key today for the Huskies will be trying to slow down the early start for William & Mary. The Tribe turned in their second-highest scoring first half of the season (45 points) and led by 27 points at the break. They shot 60.7 percent from the field in the opening half. If Thornton, who had 25 points in the first meeting, and the Tribe, which went 23-of-27 at the charity stripe, has a repeat effort it will be difficult for the Huskies to overcome Tony Shaver's team.
