Texas-San Antonio (9-8) at Western Kentucky (13-5)
GAME NOTES: The Western Kentucky Hilltoppers put their perfect Conference USA record on the line when they host the Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners at E.A. Diddle Arena on Saturday afternoon.
The Roadrunners rose above the .500 mark overall and to a 3-3 league record on Thursday with an 82-68 victory over Marshall at the Cam Henderson Center. UTSA has won its last three true road tests, all of which were in conference. Coach Brooks Thompson's squad is ranked fourth in C-USA in scoring offense at 72.2 ppg, but near the bottom in the 14-team league in scoring defense at 71.2 ppg. UTSA performed better than usual defensively versus the Thundering Herd, who hit on only 38.1 percent of their shots from the floor, including a 7-of-27 showing beyond the arc.
The Hilltoppers notched their eighth win in a row and improved to 6-0 in C-USA play with a 71-66 overtime win over Texas-El Paso on Thursday. Coach Ray Harper's team trailed by 10 points in the second half before storming back to capture the improbable victory. Western Kentucky, which is 13-5 overall, took over sole possession of first place in the C-USA standings with the win and Louisiana Tech's unexpected loss at North Texas. WKU is ranked second in the league in scoring offense (73.7 ppg) and eighth in scoring defense (66.7 ppg). WKU is averaging 80.5 points during its current eight-game win streak, outscoring its opponents by a whopping 17.3 per game, committing just 11.1 turnovers per outing while averaging 15.9 assists and outrebounding opponents by 6.5 boards per game.
This bout marks the first meeting between WKU and UTSA on the hardwood.
The Roadrunners managed to draw 28 personal fouls versus Marshall, which led to a 28-of-38 performance at the charity stripe. UTSA also finished with a 42-29 advantage in total rebounds and made good on 24-of-50 field goal attempts. Jeromie Hill led the way with a career-high 36 points on 13-of-22 efficiency from the floor. Senior center Kaj-Bjorn Sherman chipped in 14 points, Ryan Bowie had 11 points and Keon Lewis netted 10. Hill continues to lead UTSA at 16.7 points and 7.1 rebounds per game. Those marks both rank fifth on the C-USA leader boards. Keon Lewis has also been impressive throughout the campaign en route to averages of 13.9 points, 3.6 assists and 1.6 steals per outing.
WKU leads C-USA and ranks 49th nationally with 14.9 apg. George Fant has been spearheading the charge during the current win streak. The 6-foot-6 senior has posted 18.1 points and 11.1 rebounds per game during his current stretch of seven straight double-doubles. Fellow senior T.J. Price has also been on a roll, netting 18.7 ppg during the team's current run, and scoring at least 20 points in seven of his last 10 games against Division I foes. In the overtime victory against UTEP, Price finished with 12 points and eight boards, while Fant tallied 13 points and 11 rebounds. The starting backcourt of Chris Harrison-Docks and Trency Jackson combined for 26 points, 11 boards and seven assists.
The Roadrunners are a middle-of-the-road team in C-USA, but they can compete with anyone in the league if Hill continues to dominate offensively. WKU has been unstoppable as a unit, winning 12 of its last 14 games. Two of the Hilltoppers' last three bouts have gone to overtime, but they should be able to win this one in regulation.
