Morgantown, WV (SportsNetwork.com) - Juwan Staten posted 20 points to lift the West Virginia Mountaineers to a 64-54 victory over the Monmouth Hawks in the 2014-15 season opener for both sides at WVU Coliseum.

Devin Williams also made an impact for WVU (1-0) with 15 points and the same number of rebounds. Jonathan Holton pulled down seven rebounds in the winning effort for the Mountaineers.

Deon Jones paced the Hawks (0-1) with 14 points on 4-of-5 shooting from the floor. Andrew Nicholas provided 10 points off the bench, while Brice Kofane recorded 11 boards.

Monmouth took a 26-21 lead into the break after it hit on 45 percent of its field goal tries in the opening 20 minutes of the contest. The Mountaineers were limited to 16.7 percent shooting from the floor, including a 3-of-18 clip from beyond the arc in the first half.

Although WVU hit on only 36.4 percent of its shots from the field after the break, it managed to overcome the deficit thanks to its 16-of-22 efficiency at the free-throw line. Monmouth attempted 15 less shots from the floor than the hosts in the second period. The Mountaineers ended the game on a 28-8 run.

WVU outscored the Hawks, 18-6, from 3-point range.
