Oral Roberts (2-3) at Weber State (2-3)
GAME NOTES: The Weber State Wildcats have returned home for a non-conference battle with the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles.
Last week, Oral Roberts took part in the MGM Grand Main Event in Las Vegas. The Golden Eagles split their two games there after falling to Oregon State, 55-42, in regional play. The event ended with a 69-66 victory over Milwaukee, which as the second win in five tries for the team on the season. Oral Roberts will host its next two games against Missouri State and New Mexico State.
Weber State tried its luck in an early season tournament as well, taking part in the U.S. Virgin Islands Paradise Jam last weekend. The Wildcats finished 2-1 in the event with a win over Nevada (59-56), following losses against Illinois State (73-64) and LSU (72-58). They also are 2-3 overall as this game approaches. They visit Texas-Arlington in their next contest.
These teams met twice during the 2013-14 season, with Weber State claiming victory both times, including an 83-74 decision in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament. The Wildcats lead the all-time series, 4-2.
Korey Billbury dropped in a layup and an ensuing foul shot to break a 64-64 tie with six seconds to play against Milwaukee. The three-point play put the Golden Eagles ahead for good in their final game of the MGM Grand Main Event. As a team, Oral Roberts made only 40.7 percent of its shots from the floor, but it secured the win thanks to a 21-12 scoring edge at the free-throw line. Obi Emegano netted 20 points to pace the winning effort.
It has been a struggle for Oral Roberts to put points on the scoreboard. The Golden Eagles are averaging a meager 60.8 points per game, while posting extremely weak marks in assists (7.6 apg) and field goal percentage (.339). On defense, they are allowing opponents to make 46.1 percent of their attempts from the field. Emegano (18.4 ppg, 5.8 rpg) and Billbury (13.6 ppg, 7.6 rpg, 3 apg) are the only double-digit scorers on the roster, although Billbury is only connecting on 33.3 percent of his field goal tries. Billbury recorded a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds, while also dishing out six assists in the win over Milwaukee.
Jeremy Senglin drilled a 3-pointer with 19 seconds to play and Joel Bolomboy sank a pair of free-throws shortly thereafter to secure Weber State's win over Nevada. The Wildcats limited the Wolf Pack to 35.7 percent shooting in the contest, while owning an 18-6 scoring edge from 3-point range. That helped make up for a 43-23 deficit on the boards. Senglin finished with a team-high 16 points in the win.
Weber State has not been scoring much more than Oral Roberts. The Wildcats are averaging just 63.2 points per game, although their field goal percentage (.421) is markedly better in comparison to the Golden Eagles. Bolomboy (16.6 ppg, 10.8 rpg, 2.4 bpg) is a monster on the interior. He has had at least 10 points and nine rebounds in four of five games this season, including a pair of double-doubles. Senglin (14.2 ppg) can light up the scoreboard as well, but the Wildcats don't have many scoring sources from there.
Both of these teams bring confidence from a much-needed win into this contest. The Wildcats' should be the squad to keep the momentum going, as Bolomboy will lead them to a solid home win.
