Blacksburg, VA (SportsNetwork.com) - Adam Smith tallied 16 points in helping the Virginia Tech Hokies best The Citadel Bulldogs, 64-61, in non-conference play at Cassell Coliseum.
Devin Wilson and Joey van Zegeren both netted 10 points for the Hokies (6-4), who have won back-to-back contests.
Ashton Moore knocked down a game-high 27 points, including 7-of-15 from beyond the arc, for the Bulldogs (4-6), who have dropped their last two. Jake Wright added 12 points.
The teams were pretty evenly matched in the first half, with the Bulldogs shooting 36 percent from the field to their opponents' 35.7 percent. The visitors were up 27-22 at halftime.
In the second half, the Bulldogs dipped to just 32.4 percent from the floor, while the Hokies improved to shoot 48.1 percent. The score was tied 58-58 with 2:02 left to play, but less than 30 seconds later, a Wilson layup gave the home team a lead, which they did not relinquish.
Virginia Tech was dominant in the paint, where it outscored the opposition 36-14 on the way to the victory. The Hokies also outscored the Bulldogs, 15-6, from the free-throw line.
