Miami-Ohio (2-2) vs. Virginia Tech (2-2)
GAME NOTES: The Cancun Challenge enters the championship round on Wednesday, as the Miami-Ohio RedHawks take on the Virginia Tech Hokies.
Miami-Ohio has lost two of the last three outings and are now 2-2 on the season. On Tuesday the team was taken out by Northwestern by a score of 55-46, scoring the fewest points in any game thus far.
Similar to the efforts of the RedHawks yesterday, the Hokies also had trouble getting their offense into gear as they folded against Northern Iowa, 73-54. The loss was the second in as many games for a VaTech program that had opened the 2014-15 campaign with back-to-back victories over Maryland-Eastern Shore and Liberty.
These teams have met twice before, with each picking up a victory. The latest encounter was back in 1985, with the RedHawks capturing an 83-82 overtime victory on a neutral floor.
The RedHawks limped into the meeting with Northwestern by converting a total of just eight field goals in the first half, falling behind by six at the break. If they thought that was bad, there was no way to prepare Miami for the second half where it connected on only seven field goals, en route to the nine-point loss. The only player to score in double figures for Miami was Eric Washington who tallied 12 points on 3-of-14 shooting from the floor.
On a team that is scoring just 58.8 ppg at the moment, Will Sullivan leads the scoring attack with a mere 11.3 ppg, although you should be impressed by the fact that he is shooting not only 58.3 percent from the floor but also 11- of-18 (.611) behind the 3-point line. Geovonie McKnight and Washington check in with 10.8 and 10.3 ppg, respectively.
The starting five for the Hokies were not up to the task of competing with undefeated Northern Iowa yesterday, combining to score only 22 points, while the reserves stepped up and made things interesting by posting 32 points. Unfortunately, Virginia Tech was playing from behind immediately and never caught up, with Joey van Zegeren the lone double-digit scorer for the program with 15 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field.
van Zegeren, who has led the team in scoring twice in four games, accounts for 11.0 ppg as he shoots 61.3 percent from the field, but his average could be even higher if not for the fact that he has converted only 6-of-15 at the charity stripe. Unfortunately, Tech as a unit is hitting free throws at a mere 55.4 percent clip, compared to 68.9 percent for the competition.
The RedHawks don't score a lot of points, but at least the defense is up to the task of slowing down opponents at the same time. Seeing as how Virginia Tech isn't built for point production, this might be a meeting that favors Miami.
