UNC Wilmington (1-1) at VMI (2-1)
GAME NOTES: The VMI Keydets and UNC Wilmington Seahawks square off in a non- conference tilt at Cameron Hall on Saturday night.
UNCW opened the season with a loss to Old Dominion but found its way into the win column with an 84-72 victory over UNC Greensboro on Wednesday.
Craig Ponder poured in 26 points for UNCW, which connected on 65.3 percent of its field goal attempts, including a 10-of-16 showing from 3-point range, in the road win.
Ponder also handed out a team-high six assists and added three steals. Dylan Sherwood provided a spark off the bench for the Seahawks with 16 points on 6- of-8 shooting from the floor, while Freddie Jackson netted 13 points.
VMI will surely see better competition on Saturday than it did on Tuesday when the Keydets set a school record for margin of victory in a 124-42 drubbing of Johnson University. The game's first 28 points were scored by the Keydets, which was just six shy of the Division I record.
Six VMI players scored in double figures and Q.J. Peterson paced the club with 19 points. Peterson also netted 19 in a loss to Army last Saturday.
Craig Hinton made his season debut and donated 16 points and four assists -- both career highs for the sophomore.
UNC Wilmington downed VMI in the only previous meeting between the two teams, that taking place on Nov. 24, 2009.
The Seahawks should be used to the road already considering they are playing away from home for the third straight time to start the season. While VMI has shown it can fill the bucket in the early going, UNCW should be able to do enough to come away with the win.
