VANDERBILT COMMODORES

Vanderbilt Commodores

Vanderbilt Commodores VS. Yale Bulldogs

Yale (10-4) at Vanderbilt (9-3)

GAME NOTES: The Vanderbilt Commodores close out their non-conference schedule by hosting the Yale Bulldogs at Memorial Gym on Saturday afternoon.

Vanderbilt, which has won two in a row and four of its last five contests overall, is coming off a 70-55 triumph at Saint Louis on Wednesday.

The Bulldogs have notched five victories in their last seven outings, including a 70-64 win at Sacred Heart on Tuesday.

The Commodores hold a 4-1 lead in the all-time series with Yale, but the teams haven't met since Nov. 30, 1984 at Memorial Gym when Vandy earned an 87-72 win.

On Wednesday, Riley LaChance scored a game-high 19 points and pulled down seven rebounds to lead the Commodores to victory over the Billikens. Damian Jones had 15 points, although he was also charged with five turnovers without the benefit of a single assist.

Jones, a 6-foot-10 sophomore center, leads the team at 16.4 points per game and is first in rebounding (7.0 rpg). He is also second in the SEC in field goal percentage (.562). LaChance (13.0 ppg), a freshman guard, leads the team with 25 3-pointers and senior forward James Siakam (10.1 ppg) has scored in double figures in seven of his last nine contests and is shooting 67.2 percent from the floor. Guard Wade Baldwin IV (8.3 ppg), forward Jeff Roberson (4.8 ppg), along with LaChance give the Commodores a trio of true freshman starters for the first time since the 2009 SEC Tournament. Luke Kornet (8.8 ppg, 4.0 rpg), a 7-foot sophomore forward, is part of a team that shoots an SEC-leading 51.4 percent from the field.

Javier Duren had 22 points and Justin Sears tallied 16 in Yale's latest victory. The Bulldogs shot 10-of-16 from 3-point range and overcame a 51 percent shooting effort by Sacred Heart. Yale also committed 20 turnovers, but dominated the boards by a 38-19 count.

This game in Nashville will be a homecoming for Yale junior guard Jack Montague, who is from nearby Brentwood, TN. Yale practiced at Brentwood High School after arriving on Thursday. Montague, who starred at Brentwood, has connected on 51.5 percent of his 3-point shots this season and is averaging 9.9 ppg. Sears (13.8 pp, 8.0 rpg) leads the team's offense. Duren (13.1 ppg) is the only other player averaging double digits in scoring. Senior forward and Rhodes Scholar Matt Townsend (8.8 ppg) is shooting 53.6 percent from the field.

Yale gives up 61.7 ppg, while Vandy allows just 60.5, but scores 73.4 ppg. Vanderbilt has a 19-5 all-time record against the Ivy League. That includes a 79-50 win over Penn on Dec. 22.

Even though it will mark an emotional return to Nashville for Montague, expect the Commodores to dominate the inside and limit the offensive opportunities for Yale in what will likely be a low-scoring affair.
