Tennessee (13-9) at Vanderbilt (13-10)
GAME NOTES: Looking to improve on a two-game winning streak, the Vanderbilt Commodores will entertain the Tennessee Volunteers in an SEC showdown at Memorial Gymnasium on Wednesday.
Vanderbilt is trying to correct a seven-game losing streak with two consecutive wins over Florida (67-61) and South Carolina (65-50), and will be seeking a third Wednesday. The Commodores are just 3-7 against SEC competition this season, but own an 11-3 mark at home.
Tennessee is heading in an opposite direction. The Volunteers have dropped two straight decisions, and four of their last five altogether. The Vols lost a narrow 56-53 game against Georgia on Saturday to fall to 5-5 in league play.
Tennessee leads the all-time series over Vanderbilt, 114-71. But in Nashville, the Commodores own a 53-38 advantage over the Volunteers. This is the first of two meetings between the two sides during this regular season.
After falling behind by seven points to Georgia at halftime in Saturday's SEC clash, Tennessee did everything it could in the second period to make up some ground. And although the Volunteers were able to shave four points off the Bulldogs' first-half lead, it wasn't enough to complete the comeback on the road. Armani Moore tallied 16 points to lead Tennessee in the defeat, while Robert Hubbs III added 15 points with six rebounds. Kevin Punter chipped in with 10 points and six steals for the Vols, who finished the game shooting 35.7 percent from the floor.
Josh Richardson, the team's leading scorer, was held to a mere two points in the loss to Georgia on Saturday. Richardson still checks in atop the team's leaderboard, netting 15.6 ppg on 45.9 percent shooting, adding in a team- leading 82 assists. Punter (10.9 ppg) and Moore (10.4 ppg) round out a trio of double-digit scorers for the Volunteers, who are averaging 64.0 ppg as a unit. That scoring total for Tennessee has the team ranked 12th out of 14 SEC teams in the offensive department, but the team's scoring defense is allowing only 62.8 ppg to opponents. Moore currently tops the squad with a 7.0 rpg mark, adding in another team best in blocked shots with 27.
Vanderbilt got off to a slow start against South Carolina on Saturday, and even trailed the Gamecocks at halftime by a 26-22 margin. The Commodores exploded offensively in the second half, connecting on 52.4 percent of their shots in the frame and making 17-of-24 from the free-throw line to overtake the Gamecocks. Riley LaChance netted 19 points to lead the squad, while James Siakam tallied a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Wade Baldwin IV chipped in with 10 points to complete the double-figure scoring for Vanderbilt in the win.
Damian Jones netted nine points for Vanderbilt against South Carolina, which brought his team-leading scoring average down. He now checks in with a 14.8 ppg mark, also leading the squad in rebounding with 6.6 rpg. LaChance is the only other Commodore in double-digit scoring at 12.8 ppg. Baldwin's 4.3 apg average ranks fifth in the SEC this season, and Jones, who nets 53.5 percent of his shot attempts, is second in the league in field-goal percentage. Vanderbilt is netting 69.5 ppg on 46.8 percent shooting, and is allowing opponents to score 63.3 ppg on 40.4 percent shooting.
Vanderbilt seems to be putting together some strong performances now that the losing streak is over. The Commodores will have a tough test against Tennessee, especially if Richardson can bounce back from his subpar outing. But the home advantage should help Vanderbilt.
