Recap: Texas-El Paso vs. Washington St

El Paso, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - Vince Hunter registered a double-double with 14 points and a game-high 16 rebounds as the Miners of UTEP took down the Washington State Cougars, 65-52, in non-conference action at the Don Haskins Center.

Hunter, who had more offensive rebounds (eight) than the entire WSU squad (seven), shot only 5-of-15 from the field and 4-of-8 at the free-throw line as the Miners (1-0) captured the season-opening win at home. Earvin Morris accounted for 13 points off the bench and C.J. Cooper tacked on 11 points and five assists.

The Cougars (0-1) were led by DaVonte Lacy with 15 points, but he converted only 3-of-12 from the field, followed by Ike Iroegbu and Que Johnson with 10 points apiece, the latter adding a team-best 11 rebounds in a reserve role.

Both teams had trouble shooting the ball from the field in the first half, each hitting under 38 percent, but thanks to a 10-4 advantage at the free- throw line the Miners were able to move out to a 32-26 edge at the break.

In the second half UTEP again had issues from the floor, making good on only 34.3 percent, but at the same time WSU knocked down a total of only 10 field goals, allowing the hosts to cruise to the double-digit win.

In addition to being outscored at the free-throw line by a 17-8 margin, the Cougars suffered 22 turnovers and were beaten on the glass, 46-37.
