New Mexico (10-5) at Utah State (9-6)
GAME NOTES: Both New Mexico and Utah State hope to find their shooting stroke Saturday when the two square off in a Mountain West Conference battle at Dee Glen Smith Spectrum.
For Utah State, the game will be played one day after head coach Stew Morrill announced this season will be his last on the bench.
Morrill has been on the Aggies' sideline for the past 17 years and has been in the coaching field for 40 years. The school's all-time winningest coach has gone 393-149 in his years at Utah State and has compiled a 611-287 record as a college head coach overall.
"I am looking forward to the remainder of this season, but then I believe the Utah State basketball program will benefit by having a new 'voice' as its head coach," Morrill said Friday.
The school said it will name its new head coach at the end of the campaign.
New Mexico, meanwhile, had won its first two conference games before falling to San Diego State, 56-42, on Tuesday. The Lobos shot just 29.8 percent from the floor, 13 percent below their season average, and did not have anyone score more than seven points.
It's been that kind of season for New Mexico since losing leading scorer Cullen Neal (17.0 ppg) to a high ankle sprain in November. Deshawn Delaney and Hugh Greenwood have shown flashes, but the two combined for nine points on 3- of-14 shooting against SDSU.
Still, the Lobos have managed to stay competitive with a stout defense of their own, one that has held opponents to 58.2 ppg on 38.0 percent shooting en route to a 10-5 start to the season. The team is also a plus-3 in rebounds per game.
Delaney is averaging 12.9 ppg, while Greenwood is putting up 10.3 with a team- high 5.9 rpg. The offense can surely be improved considering the squad is shooting 29.6 percent from 3-point range and just 65.5 percent at the foul line.
Utah State also struggled mightily from the stripe on Wednesday, making just five of its 13 attempts in a 61-52 road loss to Fresno State. The Aggies, who were outrebounded 39-27, rallied from an 11-point deficit at the break to pull even in the second half but never got over the hump.
Jalen Moore and David Collette provided nearly 65 percent of Utah State's scoring production with 17 and 16 points, respectively. No one else made more than two field goals in the loss, which snapped a three-game winning streak and dropped the Aggies to 9-6 on the season.
Moore and Collette usually get help from Chris Smith (11.1 ppg) and Darius Perkins (9.5 ppg), but the duo combined to shoot 2-of-16 from the floor in the setback. Moore leads the team with 15.3 points and 7.2 rebounds per game, while Collette is also solid up front with 13.7 points and 5.2 rebounds each time out.
New Mexico swept the season series last year but Utah State is 19-6 all-time against the Lobos. The Aggies are dealing with bigger issues stemming from Morrill's seemingly sudden announcement on Friday, but they should be able to give their longtime head coach a solid victory over a tough opponent.
