Recap: USC Upstate vs. UT Martin
Spartanburg, SC (SportsNetwork.com) - Twymond Howard netted 15 points and secured seven rebounds to lead his UT Martin Skyhawks past the USC Upstate Spartans, 60-49, in the second round of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament at the Hodge Center.
Deville Smith, who notched a triple-double in his last outing against Northwestern State, chipped in 14 points, seven rebounds and four steals for UT Martin (20-12), which moves on to the third round of the tournament and will await its next opponent. Alex Anderson added 13 points in the victory.
Ty Greene scored 17 points to lead USC Upstate (24-12), but the Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Year shot a dismal 1-of-15 from 3-point range. Fred Miller contributed 10 points and seven rebounds, and Jacob Schulte added 10 points of his own in the defeat.
Neither team shot the ball well in the opening half. USC Upstate connected on 39.3 percent of its attempts from the floor to take a slim 31-29 lead into the intermission. UT Martin made a dismal 25 percent of its shots in the frame.
But the tables turned in the second half. The host Spartans dropped to 19.2 percent from the field (5-of-26 shooting) with a 2-of-20 mark from 3-point distance. The Skyhawks improved to 33.3 percent with a 5-of-12 line from beyond the arc to pull ahead for the win.
UT Martin outscored USC Upstate from 3-point range, 27-12, and from the free- throw line, 17-13, to help the Skyhawks pull off the road win.
