Spartanburg, SC (SportsNetwork.com) - Jacob Schulte made a layup with 1:03 left to play to give the USC Upstate Spartans a 73-72 lead, and neither the Spartans nor the James Madison Dukes got on the board again as Upstate held on to win in the opening round of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament at Hodge Center.

Ty Greene netted 26 points to pace the Spartans (23-11), who will advance to the second round of the CIT and will await their next opponent. Fred Miller chipped in with 18 points, Shunquez Stephens added 11 with seven rebounds and Josh Cuthbertson chimed in with 10 points off the bench in the win.

Jackson Kent scored 19 points to pace James Madison (19-13), while Ron Curry contributed 14 points and Joey McLean added 12. Yohanny Dalembert grabbed a team-best 11 rebounds in the defeat.

James Madison connected on 43.3 percent of its shots in the first half, which included a 6-of-15 mark from 3-point distance, to grab a slim 34-33 lead at the intermission. USC Upstate hit on 43.8 percent of their attempts from the floor in the period.

The Spartans improved to shoot 52 percent from the field in the second half, which included 8-of-17 from beyond the arc. The Dukes converted 46.9 percent of their field goals in the frame, and didn't take a single attempt from the free-throw line to allow the host Spartans to nab the lead and advance.

Upstate outscored James Madison from the charity stripe, 7-2, and owned a 36-30 advantage in rebounding in the win. The Dukes held an edge in points off turnovers, 22-8, over the Spartans.
