Recap: USC vs. Portland State
Los Angeles, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Tiegbe Bamba scored 19 points, leading five players in double figures, as the Portland State Vikings surprised the USC Trojans, 76-68, in the season opener for both programs at the Galen Center.
Bamba shot 8-of-11 from the floor and made good on all three of his attempts from 3-point range for the Vikings (1-0) as the team converted 8-of-18 on the perimeter. Braxton Tucker was a perfect 6-of-6 at the free-throw line as he tallied 16 points, followed by Bryce White and Tim Douglas with 14 points apiece and Dashaun Wiggins 10 points off the bench.
The Trojans (0-1) were led by Jordan McLaughlin who dropped in 19 points and handed out six assists, but he also turned the ball over seven times for the hosts. Katin Reinhardt was credited with 11 points and Malik Martin 10.
Both teams connected on 14 field goals in the first half, but the big difference saw USC make only 1-of-7 beyond the arc and PSU convert 6-of-10 on the perimeter, en route to a 39-32 advantage at the break.
In the second half both sides again made the same number of field goals (11), so even though USC had the much better shooting percentage (.579 to .314), the Vikings still held on for the win, their first ever versus the Trojans.
In a game that featured one tie and eight lead changes, the hosts hurt themselves with 23 turnovers, which Portland State traded in for 31 points.
