Recap: UNLV vs. Portland
Las Vegas, NV (SportsNetwork.com) - Rashad Vaughn poured in 25 points and grabbed seven rebounds as the UNLV Runnin' Rebels outlasted the Portland Pilots, 75-73, in a non-conference overtime matchup at Thomas & Mack Center.
Christian Wood chipped in with 17 points and six rebounds, and Cody Doolin netted 15 points for UNLV (7-2), which has won three consecutive games.
Alec Wintering scored 24 points and dished out five assists to pace Portland (7-3). Riley Barker added 14 points, Volodymyr Gerun contributed 11 with eight rebounds and Thomas van der Mars registered 10 points with nine boards in the loss, which was the second in three games for the Pilots.
Portland took a very slim 29-28 lead into halftime after the Pilots shot 37 percent from the floor in the first frame, adding in a perfect 7-of-7 mark from the free-throw line. UNLV made 44 percent of its shots in the period.
The Rebels hit on 46.2 percent of their shots in the second half, and made 10- of-12 from the charity stripe to make the one-point comeback. The Pilots buried 46.9 percent of their shots, but made only 1-of-3 from the foul line as the game was sent to extra time.
In the additional five minutes, UNLV was able to pull ahead and outscore Portland, 13-11, to pick up the victory.
The Rebels held a 14-9 advantage in bench scoring, and ultimately had a 13-11 edge in made free throws.
