UNC-Wilmington Seahawks VS. Charleston Cougars

College of Charleston (9-23) vs. UNC Wilmington (17-12)

GAME NOTES: The Colonial Athletic Association Tournament rolls on Saturday with a matchup featuring the 10th-seeded College of Charleston Cougars taking on the Seahawks of second-seeded UNC Wilmington at Royal Farms Arena.

The winner will advance to Sunday's semifinal round to face either defending CAA champion Delaware or Northeastern with a shot at the title bout on the line.

College of Charleston pulled off its first upset with a 56-48 victory over seventh-seeded Drexel on Friday night. The Cougars ended a three-game losing streak with the win, and were able to beat Drexel for the first time this season.

UNC Wilmington finished as one of four teams with a 12-6 record atop the CAA standings, which handed the Seahawks a share of the regular-season crown. UNCW saw a two-game win streak come to an end in the team's season finale against Elon, 74-55, setting the Seahawks back to 17-12 overall.

Charleston and UNCW met twice during the regular season, and the results weren't so positive for the Cougars. The Seahawks took both decisions in the head-to-head matchups, winning by two in Charleston (58-56) and by 10 in Wilmington (58-48).

Overall it wasn't a pretty offensive performance by either Charleston or Drexel on Friday night. The Cougars connected on 35.3 percent of their shots from the floor in the game, while they held the Dragons to 39.5 percent shooting in the contest. Canyon Barry led the charge for College of Charleston, netting 19 points with a perfect 7-of-7 mark from the free-throw line. Joe Chealey added 11 points for the Cougars, and Terrance O'Donohue grabbed a team-best 14 rebounds in the win.

The Cougars were able to overcome the fact that they owned the worst scoring offense in the league during the regular season (58.9 ppg entering the tournament) by playing strong defense against a Drexel team that was missing the conference's top scorer in Damion Lee. Barry and Chealey each led the team with 12.4 ppg entering the postseason, while Chealey led the way with 105 assists. The last time Charleston played UNC Wilmington on Feb. 11, Chealey scored a team-best 12 points and Barry added 11, but the Cougars finished the game shooting a dismal 27.8 percent from the floor en route to the 10-point defeat.

It certainly wasn't a strong offensive showing for UNC Wilmington in the season finale against Elon. The Seahawks connected on a mere 33.9 percent shooting in the contest, and missed all 14 of their 3-point attempts. The team also went just 15-of-27 from the free-throw line, and turned the ball over 16 times in the near 20-point loss. Addison Spruill netted 15 points as the only UNC Wilmington player in double figures for the contest. Cedrick Williams pulled down eight rebounds, Craig Ponder netted eight with seven boards and Jordon Talley dished out the team's lone assist.

Spruill paced the Seahawks in scoring this season with 14.5 ppg on 45.4 percent shooting, adding in a team-best 6.5 rpg. Freddie Jackson was second on the scoring list with 13.2 ppg, and Ponder rounded out a trio of double-digit scorers for UNCW with 11.2 ppg. Talley led the squad with 85 assists on the year, but he was also responsible for a whopping 107 personal fouls and 11 foul outs in 29 games played. The Seahawks netted 69.6 ppg this season on 43.9 percent shooting from the floor, and had some defensive troubles slowing opponents, allowing 68.3 ppg.

The Cougars will likely find that their run will be short-lived, considering the Seahawks possess an offense much stronger than short-handed Drexel. If Charleston struggles to score early, this one will be over fast.

Predicted Outcome

UNC Wilmington 67, College of Charleston 57
