Youngstown State (1-3) vs. UNC Greensboro (2-3)
GAME NOTES: In their last test of the EMU Showcase, the UNC Greensboro Penguins will deal with the UNC Greensboro Spartans on Sunday.
Youngstown State has had mixed results this weekend. The Penguins began on Friday with a 71-62 loss to host Eastern Michigan, but recovered for an 82-72 victory over Longwood on Saturday. They are now 2-3 overall, with a home date against UMKC next.
UNCG has not earned a passing grade this weekend, losing in overtime to Longwood (81-79) and in regulation against Eastern Michigan (70-62). The Spartans have a real test ahead of them, as they visit Big Ten foe Indiana next.
This bout marks the first-ever meeting between these two programs.
While shooting from 3-point range wasn't easy (3-of-14), the Penguins did everything else well on offense against Longwood. They connected on 52.6 percent of their shots from the field overall, while assisting on 30 of their field goals. DJ Cole scored 18 points and dished out 12 helpers to lead all five starters in double figures.
As a team, Youngstown State has not had such tremendous offensive success this season. The Penguins are only scoring 67.8 points per game and shooting40.7 percent from the floor. They have continually failed to take advantage of chances from 3-point range, sinking only 23.8 percent. Bobby Hain (14.8 ppg) is the leading offensive option and top rebounder (6.8 rpg) while actually sinking 50.9 percent from the floor. Marcus Keene (13.2 ppg) and Shawn Amiker (13 ppg) are the next-best scorers, but Keene is only netting 39.7 percent of his field goal tries, including an 11-of-36 effort from beyond the arc. Hain had 15 points and 12 rebounds on Saturday, while Amiker erupted for 18 points and eight boards. Jalon Plummer had 13 points in the win, and Keene chipped in 11.
UNCG started slow and finished strong, but it was not enough against Eastern Michigan. After recording six field goals on only 24 percent shooting in the first half, the Spartans found themselves behind, 30-19, at intermission. They rallied a bit in the second half by netting 53.6 percent of their field goal attempts, but they allowed the Eagles to close the game with a 56 percent effort. Kayel Locke scored 14 points to pace the losing effort.
Leading scorer Tevon Saddler (17.3 ppg) did record a double-digit scoring effort in the contest, but he struggled his way to 13 points on 3-of-10 shooting. Saddler has been much more than a scorer for the Spartans, however, as he has 18 assists and 12 steals, both team-highs. Unfortunately his 21 turnovers head the team as well. RJ White (15.3 ppg, 6.8 rpg) and Locke (12.5 ppg, 6.3 rpg) are a solid tandem on the interior, with White showing good hands with nine steals and three blocks.
For UNCG to salvage the weekend it will need to get Saddler going. YSU's offensive effort was nice to see on Saturday, so expect the Penguins to build off of that performance.
