Recap: UNC Greensboro vs. UNC-Wilmington
Greensboro, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - Craig Ponder poured in 26 points to lead the UNC Wilmington Seahawks to an 84-72 victory over the UNC Greensboro Spartans in a non-conference tilt at Greensboro Coliseum.
Ponder also handed out a team-high six assists and paced UNCW (1-1) with three steals. Dylan Sherwood provided a spark off the bench for the Seahawks with 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the floor, while Freddie Jackson netted 13 points.
For the Spartans (1-1), Kayel Locke converted 12-of-16 free-throw attempts en route to 22 points and also pulled down a game-high eight boards. Tevon Saddler and R.J. White scored 16 points each, with the former also dealing out six assists.
UNCW connected on 59.3 percent of its field goal attempts, including a 3-of-6 clip from 3-point range in the opening 20 minutes of the contest. The Spartans went into the intermission trailing, 39-31, after going 0-of-9 from beyond the arc in the first half.
Despite outscoring UNCW, 20-8, in the paint and also, 16-5, on points off turnovers in the second half, the Spartans trailed by multiple possessions for the final 6:25 of regulation.
The Seahawks finished 10-of-16 from beyond the arc, with Ponder and Sherwood combining to go 8-for-10.
